The Montgomery bus boycott in the United States and the My Lai Massacre in South Vietnam are both topics in the National Curriculum for History. AQA and Edexcel put particular emphasis on them as pivotal events.
Ordinary ethnically diverse people are at the heart of both these stories, which are told through the lives of the individuals who were there. Students understand that history is about the actions of ordinary individuals, people they can identify with, that what they say and do matters.
Hearing about events while seeing contemporary artefacts is a compelling combination. Access to such a variety of primary sources helps students to gain deeper understanding of different interpretations and points of view.
With these workshops history comes off the page, events become three-dimensional, accessible, engaging and memorable. Students have the opportunity to evaluate primary visual and auditory sources and explore causation, consequence and the power of ordinary people to bring about change.
